If you’re looking for a family getaway that doesn’t require a plane ticket or a week of planning, let me tell you about Great Wolf Lodge in Connecticut. My family and I visited the Fitchburg, Massachusetts location, and it was exactly what we needed after a few months of non-stop activities.
Now we’re planning our next trip to the brand-new Great Wolf Lodge in Mashantucket, Connecticut—and this time we’re tying it in with a visit to Foxwoods Resort Casino. A little spa time for the adults? Yes, please!
After our first Great Wolf Lodge experience, I picked up some insider tips that totally changed the game. Here’s everything you need to know before booking your Connecticut family vacation.
Is Great Wolf Lodge Good for Toddlers?
Absolutely! But here’s my rule of thumb: the more help you have in the water with little ones, the better. Once I feel outnumbered by babies, that’s when I know I need backup!
When our kids were younger, I felt completely comfortable with the safety of the water park. Everything is designed with young swimmers in mind, and there are lifeguards everywhere.
Why Great Wolf Lodge Works for Toddlers:
- Splash Pad Play: Zero-depth entry pools, pint-sized slides, and interactive splash pads are built specifically for little legs. No deep water anxiety here!
- Gentle Entertainment: Throughout the day, there’s story time, character meet-and-greets, dance parties, and arts and crafts that keep toddlers busy outside of the water.
- Family-Friendly Dining: High chairs, kid menus, and quick-service spots make mealtimes way less stressful—even with picky eaters.
- Suite Convenience: Sometimes you just want to go to your room and have some quiet time. The rooms are suites with a separate sleeping area and cribs available on request. That’s a big help when everyone wants to take a nap!
Can Teens Really Enjoy Great Wolf Lodge?
YES! I’m planning to go back with my kids even though they’re teens now. We need some time away as a family, and we don’t want to travel far or have to get on a plane. The new Connecticut location makes it even more convenient for us.
Four Reason Why Great Wolf Lodge is Good for Teens:
- Big-Thrill Slides and Wave Pools: Perfect for adrenaline seekers who want some excitement.
- Dry-Land Adventures: Beyond the water park, there’s a ropes course, MagiQuest, arcades, mini golf, and laser tag.
- More Independence: Resort-wide wristbands allow cashless spending and room access. Teens get freedom, parents get peace of mind.
- Social Vibe: Evening dance parties and later pool hours give teens their own hangout time to meet other guests.
Arrive Early and Stay Late Secret
This is one of my favorite tricks for any vacation because I want to soak in every last minute of fun that I can. A single night stay can be stretched to two full water-park days if you arrive early and stay late.
Here’s the deal: even though check-in is at 4:00 PM, as a resort guest, you have access to the water park starting at 1:00 PM (or whenever it opens) on your check-in day. You can play there until the water park closes on the day you check out.
As a resort guest, you can enter and exit as many times as you’d like for the entire duration of your stay.
Pro Tip: Arrive early, change into your swimsuits in the convenient changing rooms, and hit the water park right away. Then grab your room key later when check-in opens!
What Are the Food Options at Great Wolf Lodge Connecticut?
I was pleasantly surprised by the food at Great Wolf Lodge. I had delicious salmon more than once while we were there!
I also know that they have a robust allergy prevention program where guests can email the culinary team ahead of their arrival so chefs can steer them to existing menu items or create special allergy-free dishes for them. All of their kitchens are 100% nut-free.
I haven’t been to the Foxwoods location yet, but their site lists the following dining options:
Full Service:
- Fireside – Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with American cuisine, and it does serve alcoholic beverages.
Dine-In Buffet:
- Timbers Table & Kitchen – Open for breakfast and dinner with American cuisine
Quick Service:
- Hungry Wolf Food Hall – Open for lunch and dinner with pizza and alcoholic beverages.
- Fatburger, Buffalo’s Express & Hot Dog on a Stick – Open for lunch and dinner with American cuisine and alcoholic beverages
Treats:
- Wood’s End Creamery – Open for lunch and dinner with ice cream and smoothies
- Dunkin’ – Thank goodness they have a Dunkin’!
Water Park Bar:
- Tidal Wave Bar – Open for lunch and dinner, bar-only.
Is MagiQuest Worth the Extra Cost?
I didn’t take advantage of it on our first stay, but I would like to explore more of the dry land activities next time. I think it is worth it and I wish we had done it. If we stayed an extra night, it would have been the perfect add-on.
MagiQuest is a live-action game where you use a special magic wand and go on a quest throughout the lodge. Along the way, you’ll help the four Tribes, learn to cast powerful Runes, battle powerful enemies, and eventually become a Master Magi!
MagiQuest Tips:
Keep Your Wand: You can take your wand home as a souvenir and bring it back to use over and over again with the purchase of additional game time. Your wand will remember all of your completed quests, so you can pick up where you left off at your next visit.
Flexible Play Time: You get to decide how much time you want to spend in the realms of MagiQuest. Each quest takes 15 to 30 minutes to complete. With unlimited play during your stay, you can always take a break and come back later.
Interactive Magic: Treasure chests open and crystals glow bright—every wave of the wand will surprise and delight!
Mini Magi Mode: For kids age five and under, Mini Magi Mode provides all the magic of MagiQuest but in an experience that is specifically designed for younger Magi as they explore throughout the lodge.
How Many Days Do You Really Need at Great Wolf Lodge?
You can take advantage of more by staying for two nights. Especially with toddlers or teens, because there are so many things to do. And if you take advantage of the arrive early and stay late tip, you will get the most bang for your buck!
If you’re wondering if Great Wolf Lodge is good for toddlers or teens, rest assured, there is something for everyone. You know your family best, so there is a lot of flexibility if you need to cater your morning towards the toddler ages, and then make plans for the teens to do things later in the evening.
