First-Time Visitor’s Guide to the Travelers Championship: What to Know Before You Go

First-Time Visitor’s Guide to the Travelers Championship: What to Know Before You Go

If you’re heading to the Travelers Championship for the first time, you’re in for a fun and memorable day—whether you’re a golf fan or just along for the summer vibes. I’ve got your First-Time Visitor’s Guide to the Travelers Championship: What to Know Before You Go.

I had the opportunity to attend last year as a guest of Barbados Tourism, and it was such a great experience that I wanted to share everything a first-time visitor should know.  I had no idea a golf tournament could be so much fun!  And the golf was great, too!

1. Arrival: What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)

Before heading out, make sure you know the bag policy: only clear bags are allowed, and all bags will be checked at entry. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable shoes—you’ll be walking a lot!

Note on cameras: The PGA has strict rules—you can take photos with your phone, but professional cameras or lenses are not allowed during competition rounds. Always double-check the daily policy before you go.

2. Beat the Heat: Cooling Options Around the Course

It can get really hot in late June, but the Travelers organizers have that covered:

  • Cooling benches with built-in fans
  • Misting tents and shaded fan zones
  • Water bottle filling stations throughout the course
  • Climate-controlled hospitality tents (some require upgraded tickets)
  • Air-conditioned merchandise tent

Mom tip: Take breaks in shaded areas, especially with kids or older guests. The benches were a lifesaver last year!

3. Refreshments and Recharging

You’ll find refreshment stands throughout the course offering drinks, snacks, and full meals. Many sponsor tents also offer free samples—win-win!

You MUST get a refreshing cocktail from the Mount Gay Rum booth!

Need to charge your phone? Charging stations are usually located near the Fan Zone. I always bring a portable charger just in case, especially since I’m filming and posting on Instagram.

4. Where to Watch the Golfers Up Close

TPC River Highlands is super fan-friendly. You can follow your favorite golfers around or grab a good spot and stay put:

  • Hole 15 is exciting for risk-reward shots.
  • Hole 17 has great energy and shade.
  • Want autographs? Try near the practice area or as players walk off the 18th hole.

Arrive early if you want a prime spot right at the rope line!

5. Weather Delays: What to Expect

Last year, thunderstorms rolled in during the afternoon and the event was paused for safety. I waited it out in the car—and they resumed play once it was safe.

If bad weather hits:

  • Event staff will pause play
  • You’ll be directed to shelter or asked to leave the course temporarily
  • Check the Travelers Championship app or social media for updates
  • Announcements will also be made over the loudspeakers on site

Pro Tip: Keep a small umbrella or poncho in your car just in case!

6. What Happens When It’s Over?

After the final round, people head to the exits fairly quickly—but don’t rush! Take a few minutes to:

  • Snap photos with the Travelers umbrella displays
  • Visit any last tents or sponsors
  • Grab a souvenir at the merchandise tent
  • Then make your way to the shuttle pickup area

Expect some wait time for the shuttles. A snack and patience go a long way!
